President's Message 01.22.25

Dear Rotarians and friends,
Kathy Opperman visited us last Thursday and talked about the non-profit organization she started called “Pillars of Light and Love” and described the pillars as the members of the community who work to make life better for others.  As I looked around the Broad Street Grind, I felt surrounded by pillars.  Our members and partners do so much good in the community and the world.

Cranksgiving is an annual event hosted by Scooters Bike Shop in Souderton.  The event is a bike ride, with cyclists going to Landis Supermarket to purchase food. This food will be placed in a large truck, which will then be brought back to Keystone Opportunity Center's pantry for sorting and shelving. It is a very large amount of food that will be coming all at once!  Thank you to our Rotary Members - several not in the photo - who supported the event!

Hurricane Helene Support

Rotary clubs can play a crucial role in assisting the affected areas. By leveraging their extensive network and resources, Rotary clubs can mobilize quickly to provide immediate humanitarian aid, including food, clean water, and medical supplies. Additionally, Rotary members can volunteer their skills for rebuilding efforts, help coordinate disaster response activities, and support long-term recovery projects.

However, during the initial phase of any disaster recovery, the most important way to assist an impacted area is through cash donations.  CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE

2025 Meeting Topics

Greetings Rotary Members!
Over the years….I have heard a range of feedback from our club membership regarding our weekly input.  An idea I took away from the recent Vibrant Club Summit was to lean on club membership for the weekly input.  This method has a proven track record in other clubs for providing a wider range of topics, while it welcomes more people who might be a future member!

Board Intro's - John Heidgerd

John resides and works in Souderton!  He is the Pastor at Emmanuel Lutheran Church and is very active within our community..  He joined our Rotary club three years ago.  He shares, "My “Rotary Moment” came while Emmanuel was building its ministry to the people of Honduras. We partnered with some Central American neighbors to gather hurricane relief supplies for people in Santa Barbara, Honduras, who had lost so much. We were working with the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara in the process and members of the Club visited Souderton to attend a worship service during which the supplies were blessed before being shipped. I invited Dan Yocum, then STRC President, to join at the worship service and witnessed a beautiful and holy connection being made. I saw the potential of Rotary at that moment and it convinced me to be a part of it.  John will be serving on our Board from 2023 - 25.  Thank you John!

Shop with a Cop

“This was the best day of my life!” One of Santa’s Rotarian Elves overheard a young shopper say at the “Shop with a Cop” event.  Dozens of “elves” helped 16 families select items to make their holidays a bit brighter.  Carts filled not only with treats for under the tree, but also with paper towels, toiletries, cleaning supplies and diapers. The $5,000 donated by our club towards this event was wisely spent and greatly appreciated.  The event wrapped up at Souderton Pizza and Pasta, where we all enjoyed a delicious lunch and helped distribute additional gifts, including a box of K’nex per family.  A big thanks to Franconia Township Police Benevolent Association for their organization of the event and for inviting us to help spread holiday cheer. 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club

Photo: Past DG Bob Hobaugh, STRC Foundation Chair Rick Kowey, President Jason Donmoyer, Past President Karla Myers
Our club has received the distinction of being a 100% Paul Harris Club.  In Rotary District 7430, we are the fourth to do so, and join an elite group of only 20% of Rotary clubs worldwide.  The Paul Harris recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. Rotary established the recognition in 1957 to encourage and show appreciation for substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program.  Thank you to the generous members of our club for helping us achieve this status!

Members of our club and friends took the MLK Day of Service seriously!  The day is meant to be a "day on, not a day off" for service.  A volunteer driven, non-profit, in our community, Care & Share Thrift Shoppes, is in need of volunteers.  Many of Care & Share's "traditional" volunteers are in high risk groups for exposure to Covid, and are sheltering at home.  We enjoyed spending the afternoon at Care & Share and interacting with members in our community.

Congrats Class of 2020

As a Rotary club, we have been strong advocates for education and students within our community. Graduation season is upon us, and this year we wish to recognize graduates who are within our ST Rotary Club. Thanks to Covid-19, these students and their families are missing the "Pomp and Circumstance" that typically surrounds a graduation. Let's take a moment to make this milestone a bit more meaningful for our club members by sharing their good news!  Follow the link to see photos!

Run Christine!

We recently were introduced to the complexities facing patients with incredibly rare diseases. Christine Rowe, Director of Global Patient Advocacy for Alexion Pharmaceuticals, also impressed us with her enthusiasm for competing in the upcoming Boston Marathon. She will race with the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc. (NORD). We were thrilled to surprise her with a donation so she could compete. Keep up the great work!

90th Anniversary Celebration: Setting the Vision for the Centennial

Posted by Jack Ells

Ninety years is a long time, a very long time. In today's unsettled and stressed-out world, celebrating a 90th birthday or anniversary is a real accomplishment. And so, it was indeed a “special event” on the night of October 29, 2015 that the Souderton-Telford Rotary Club held in recognition of its 90 years of “Service Above Self” to our community.  Click here for the photo album

Camp Neidig

Pictured between Rotarians Al Engel and John Young are three of the six SAHS Juniors sponsored by ST this past summer.  From left to right are Chelse Burton;  Steve Sherlock; and Eve Austin.

Among the most rewarding things we get to do as Rotarians is the shaping of young adults into tomorrow's leaders through various scholarship and awards programs.  Camp Neidig is one such program which ST is pleased to sponsor each year for qualifying Souderton Area High School (SAHS) Juniors.

Stone Flick Fund Update

Word FM, a local, faith-based radio station, and the Souderton-Telford Rotary who partnered with Univest Foundation to establish the Stone & Flick Children Fund are pleased to announce that the Fund has reached $109,538.62 as of Tuesday, January 13. The Fund was started to assist the Stone daughters and Anthony Flick, surviving children who lost their parents and sibling after the devastating tragedy in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on Monday, December 15.

“We are overwhelmed by the support of the community so far,” said Dave Baker, Word FM station manager.  “It’s heartwarming to see people coming together to help those in need. We are encouraged to see that even if we can’t replace the void in these kid’s lives, we can help make their future a little brighter”
