February’s Rotary International theme of Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention resonates deeply with me...
...not only as your club president, but as an Anabaptist. Peacebuilding is not an abstract concept in my faith tradition—it is a daily practice, a posture of the heart, and a responsibility. It is also one of the reasons I was drawn to Rotary in the first place.

Rotary’s vision of creating lasting change through peace feels especially important right now. Our world is fractured in many visible ways, but peacebuilding doesn’t only happen on global stages or through large initiatives. It begins much closer to home—within our clubs, our conversations, and our relationships with one another.

Our Souderton Telford Rotary Club is a beautifully diverse group of people. We come from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, and that diversity is a strength. At the same time, it means misunderstandings can arise. We may disagree about decisions, feel frustrated with how an issue is handled, or struggle to feel heard. In those moments, it can be tempting to let harsh words or quick judgments slip out.

Peacebuilding asks more of us.

As Rotary Members, our actions speak louder than our words. How we listen, how we speak, and how we treat one another—especially when we disagree—reflects not only on us as individuals, but on Rotary itself. If we cannot practice respect, patience, and grace within our own club, it becomes much harder to model peace in the broader community.

Peacebuilding does not mean avoiding conflict. It means engaging it with humility, kindness, and a commitment to understanding. It means choosing to pause before reacting, to assume good intent, and to remember that every Rotarian at the table is here because they care.

So as we reflect on this month’s theme, I offer a simple challenge—to myself and to each of us: let’s do better. Let’s speak with intention, listen with empathy, and act in ways that build trust rather than erode it. Peacebuilding starts here, with us, and it starts now.
