As Rotary members know, travel has a way of broadening our perspective — and my recent visit to Copenhagen did exactly that.
Copenhagen is a city rich in history, culture, and thoughtful design. Bicycles fill the streets, the harbor is beautifully preserved, and there is a quiet confidence in how the city honors both its past and its future. One of the most iconic stops along the waterfront is The Little Mermaid, inspired by the beloved fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
Though modest in size, the statue draws visitors from around the world. Sitting gracefully on her rock, she represents longing, courage, sacrifice, and hope — themes that feel especially meaningful as we celebrate Women’s History Month.
The Little Mermaid’s story is one of finding her voice and choosing her path, even when it is difficult. As I stood there among travelers from many nations, I couldn’t help but reflect on the women — past and present — who have demonstrated quiet strength and bold leadership in their own ways. Women who have served their communities, led organizations, raised families, built businesses, and stepped forward when leadership was needed.
Here in our own community, I see that same spirit. Within the Souderton Telford Rotary Club, we are fortunate to have women who serve as leaders, committee chairs, volunteers, and mentors. Their dedication reflects Rotary’s commitment to service above self and to creating opportunities for all voices to be heard.
Women’s History Month is not only about looking back at achievements; it is about recognizing the ongoing contributions of women in every sphere of life — civic, professional, educational, and charitable. My time in Copenhagen was a reminder that stories endure. Symbols endure. And the courage to lead — sometimes quietly, sometimes boldly — makes a lasting difference.
As we continue our Rotary year together, may we celebrate the women who have shaped our history and support the young women who will shape our future.
