Souderton native, Doug Shupinski, will deliver a "Tale of Two Villains" on Thursday, December 1 at the Franconia Heritage Restaurant. Wine will be offered by cash donation.

It seems we all love to cheer for our favorite heroes and grumble about the villains. From the TV shows and movies, we watch to the books we read, to the stories we grew up with – there was always a “Good Guy” and a “Bad Guy”.  But real life – and real history, aren’t that simple. There are complexities and nuances to everyone and that includes the figures we love to love and those we love to hate.

This program will cover two individuals from our area who demonstrate the need to know “the rest of the story”.  What they have in common is having led lives that, on the surface, seem to paint them as villains. But by digging deeper, we’ll find that their stories are more complicated and more interesting, and not everyone is the person we have been led to believe.

Our speaker, Doug Shupinski, attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in May of 1984. Following graduation, Doug was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving at various duty stations around the world prior to his resignation in September 1989 as a Captain.

Doug is the author of two books about the American Revolution, “A Glimpse of Freedom” and “Absolved From Allegiance”. Also, Doug has had the opportunity to teach and speak extensively about the American Revolution, as well as the American Civil War in a variety of public, professional, and academic settings.

Currently, Doug is a faculty member of the Lincoln Leadership Institute in Gettysburg, PA, where he facilitates leadership development programs based on the Battle of Gettysburg.

 Founded in 2015, the Garden of Health sources fresh produce and foods free of the top eight allergens and distribute to food pantries, low-income senior housing, and community groups in Montgomery and Bucks Counties in Pennsylvania.

The club assembly is a regular rotary club meeting where there is no scheduled program but where the club president does club business such as having the Club directors report to the club on their projects, discuss upcoming fundraisers, etc.

This is a great meeting to attend to learn how our club is making a difference in our community, and how you can get involved!

Mel McDaniel began MARVIN’S HOME as a way to donate the many extra “things” that exist in the world of interior design. Marvin's Home is committed to help young adults who have been homeless or in the foster care system establish comfortable, independent living spaces.  

The second Tuesday of each month is dedicated to strengthening our STRC community by hearing from new members, committees and representatives of our Rotary District. This month, Darlene Scott and Diane Hustead will share what brought them to our club and committee chairs will be invited to share updates, as they are available. There are no District updates for February.

The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
During the spring many Rotary Clubs hold a Four-Way Test Speech Competition. It is a competition offered to high school students where the student must prepare a five to seven minute speech to illustrate the Rotary Four-Way Test.

The student is judged on Content (50%), Organization (30%), and Delivery (20%). The student must follow the Four-Way Test Theme throughout, must relate the speech to his/her own activities, must present a human-interest appeal, and must choose language that is clear, vivid and persuasive. The student must demonstrate organization of thought including an introduction, clear and orderly points and a brief conclusion that drives home the point of application. And finally, the student must be effective in his or her speech delivery including volume, grammar, gestures and attitude toward the audience.

This competition is always a highlight for our club as we look forward to hearing from the students.

This month, Suzi Berry ST Rotarian and Area 6 Assistant District Governor, will be sharing with us about the recent President Elect Training. Werner Koller will be joining us from Pottstown Rotary to share information about the upcoming District Conference.

Join us in assisting to assemble meal bags and distribute meals to our neighbors in need.

Help us keep our two-mile stretch of Schoolhouse Road trash free!  Participants should wear comfortable shoes/boots and clothing to move freely and protect their skin.  Work gloves will be made available, but it is advisable you bring your own. Weather cancellations will be made by 7pm the night before and sent to those registered through the link on this post. Rain date May 6

Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. STRC sponsors an Interact club at Souderton Area High School, which is led by Jennifer Detweiler, and they will be joining us to share what they have accomplished together this year.
